Professional Experience

2005- present  Assistant Professor- Communication Disorders, College of Communication, Florida State University.  Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in speech-language pathology, conducting clinical research, and assisting with administration of clinical education program

 

2004-2005       Director of Child and Family Programs-  Institute for Persons who are Hard of Hearing or Deaf, Center for Human Advancement.  Responsible for coordinating development of distance education courses and program evaluation funded through two congressional appropriations.

 

1999-2004       Clinical Faculty- Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, Speech & Hearing Department,             University of Kansas. Responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; supervising student clinical practicum experiences specializing in birth to three services; and serving on departmental, community, and student research committees

1994-1999Speech-Language Pathologist- Shawnee Mission School District.  Responsible  for providing assessment and intervention to students from preschool to middle    school; specializing in children with hearing loss and/or multiple disabilities.            Also responsible for supervision of graduate students in field studies.       

1998-1999Speech-Language Pathologist- Private Practice, Infant-Toddler Services of       Johnson County, Kansas.  Responsible for providing assessment and intervention    to infants and toddlers and their families in natural settings.

Jackson, C.W. (submitted, March 2008).  Family involvement in early intervention for children

who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Early Childhood Services: An Interdisciplinary Journal

of Effectiveness. 

 

This manuscript examines responses of 87 families in a pilot study of family involvement reporting key indicators of involvement and factors that facilitate or impede parental involvement in early intervention.  Early Childhood Services is a peer-reviewed journal intended for interdisciplinary practitioners working with young children.

 

Jackson, C.W., & Stoutamire, D. (submitted, August 2007).  Language outcomes of children who

received auditory verbal early intervention.  The Volta Review. (Co-authored by an

undergraduate student at FSU.)

 

This manuscript reports the results of a retrospective longitudinal study of 23 children who were deaf and participated in Auditory Verbal early intervention.  The Volta Review, associated with the Alexander Graham Bell Association, is a scientific journal for scholarly research for professionals in the field of hearing loss.

 

Jackson, C.W., Wegner, J.R., Turnbull, A.P. (revised and resubmitted, December, 2007). Family

quality of life following early identification of deafness.  Revised and re-submitted for

review to American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. (Co-authored by colleagues   at the University of Kansas).

 

Results of study examining 207 family members’ perceptions of well-being following identification of deafness at a young age.  AJSLP is a peer reviewed professional journal by the American Speech Language Hearing Association designed for speech-language pathologists.

Reports the effectiveness of a group design vocabulary intervention for 24 Spanish-English speaking preschool children.  LSHSS is a peer reviewed professional journal by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association designed for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

This manuscript reports the results of a qualitative inquiry of the experiences of families of young children who are deaf in early intervention. Communication Disorders Quarterly is a peer reviewed professional journal designed for speech-language pathologists, special educators, and teachers of the deaf.

family quality of life: Current literature and future directions. Young Exceptional Children,

(Purcell is a colleague at University of Kentucky; Turnbull, at the University of Kansas)

 

Describes how family quality of life may be affected by early educational experiences in inclusive settings.  Provides guidance for supporting family quality of life. YEC is a peer reviewed journal by the Division of Early Childhood designed for educators, clinicians, and others who work with children birth to 8 years old.

literature. Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 24(1), 15-29.

 

Review of the literature on the potential impact of deafness on family life across five domains: family interaction, emotional well-being, parenting, family resources, and support for the child who is deaf or hard of hearing.  The article is among the most cited in TECSE, a peer reviewed journal designed for researchers, higher education faculty, program developers, and advocates.

Jackson, C.W. (2007).  Facilitation of early communicative behaviors.  In A. Kamhi,

J. Masterson, & K. Apel (Eds). Clinical Decision Making in Developmental Language

Disorders.  Chapter 7. 

 

This book chapter provides a guide to intervention designed to facilitate early communicative behaviors with young children who have language learning disorders.  Chapter seven presents an overview of intervention in natural environments using a consultative service delivery model with an emphasis on evidence based language learning strategies.  The intended audience includes graduate students and speech- language pathologists.
