College of Communication gets another associate dean

Howard Goldstein named Associate Dean for Research

New position to focus on contracts, grants

Professor Howard Goldstein, chairman of the Department of Communication Disorders, has been named Associate Dean for Research in the College of Communication.

“This is a new position and one that will capitalize on Howard's superb experience and success in contracts and grants,” Dr. John Mayo, College of Communication dean, said in announcing the appointment.

“As you know, over his three terms as chair, and with the help of numerous colleagues, Howard built the Department of Communication Disorders into one of the Florida State University’s most productive ‘contracts and grants’ units,” Dr. Mayo said. “My expectation is that Howard will extend this record as associate dean, not only within his department but throughout the entire college.”

Dr. Goldstein has long been an advocate of creating a position in the dean's office to
spearhead efforts to enhance the research environment for faculty and students throughout the college.

“I am excited about taking on this role. I believe my interdisciplinary perspective and grant experience can be applied to enhancing research opportunities throughout the college,” he said. “I am looking forward to meeting collectively and individually with faculty to share thoughts about how we can increase our research productivity.”
In his new position, Dr. Goldstein plans to help identify potential grant sources; help set up timelines for preparing proposals; help new investigators plan and execute their research, creative, and sponsored projects; and help publicize the college’s research and creative achievements.

Dr. Goldstein is also Donald M. Baer Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of California – Santa Barbara in 1976, his master’s at University of Washington in 1978 and his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in 1980. He came to FSU in 1996.

He joins Dr. Gary Heald, associate dean for academics, and Barbara Robinson, assistant dean for student affairs, in the dean’s office suite. Professor Juliann Woods will succeed him as chair of the Department of Communication Disorders.
