Florida State University will be well-represented at this month’s 57th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) in San Francisco.

Four faculty members and four graduate students will present papers. Two faculty members, including one who is also presenting a paper, will participate in panel discussions. The theme of this year’s conference, which runs from May 24 through 28, is “Creating Communication: Content, Control, Critique.”

"It is an honor to join my team of scholars in representing the FSU Department of Communication at the ICA conference,” said Associate Professor Donnalyn Pompper. “This is truly an 'international' conference for me because I am co-presenting as a plenary speaker with a colleague from Leeds University in Leeds, England."

Dr. Pompper’s paper is “30 Years of Public Relations Scholarship: A Census of Our Research Methods” in the Public Relations division. She also is a participant in the pre-conference panel discussion, “Researcher-Researched ‘Difference’: In Search for Validity in the Global Sphere.”

Associate Professor Arthur Raney and PhD student Will Kinnally will present “Examining Perceived Violence in and Enjoyment of Televised Rivalry Sports Contests” in the Mass Communication division.

"Although the study of media violence in general is quite extensive, investigations into how people interpret, react to, and are affected by violence in mediated sports are few and far between,” Dr. Raney said.  “We studied the reactions of more than 550 viewers of televised college football games, and we found that the nature of the contest -- in particular, if the game pits two heated rivals against one another and the outcome of the game, wins versus losses -- greatly affects how violent people think the games are, regardless of what actually takes place on the field.

“This study may help us better understand how and why fans sometime act violently in the real world after watching a sporting event," he said.

The International Communication Association (ICA) is a preeminent academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching, and application of human and mediated communication. ICA, which publishes four top-tier academic journals in the field, is an international association with more than 3,500 members in 65 countries. Since 2003, ICA has been officially associated with the United Nations as a non-governmental association (NGO).
